| This post should have been written a while ago... Saphira spent a weekend with Maria, another BREW family. And she loved it so much there, that she decided to stay! I wasn't really disappointed because she and Marz could tussle a bit.
We did enjoy the 102.9 dog walk on Sunday. What a gorgeous day! Here are a few pics! That's Maria trying to encourage her beagle, Duke, to give the agility course a try. He wasn't too sporting about it, But Marzipan nailed it a bit later in the day! Go, Marz!
Saphira had a great time making friends with everyone who would stop for a minute to greet her. Here she is with one of her fans.
Taffy also was a star of the day! Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of her with her cadre of fans!
Libby, Maria's other beagle, knows a good deal when she sees it and cozied right up to a stroller equipped with a toddler eating goldfish crackers. Smooth move, Libby!
It was a great day... lots of fun! And I'm ready to go to BelAir, MD next Saturday to help out at an adoption day... and, maybe, pick up our next foster!
| Rusty found his forever-person! I was so hopeful when I read the first email from Deb that she could be the one for him! We arranged to meet at last Saturday's adoption day and it was love at first sight! I could tell that Rusty was smitten. Of course, it helped that Deb got down on the floor and started playing ball right away!
Yesterday, Deb came to our house and picked him up to go home. Here's some of what Deb had to say about their first evening together:
"Rusty and I made it home safe and sound...He was SO good in the car. He laid down by the time we hit State Rd and stayed down most of the way. Wow, when we got home and he came in the house his sniffer was sniffing BIG TIME. I think he has sniffed and inspected every inch of the house. After I fed him I took him out in the back yard and we played ball for about fifteen minutes. Boy is he fast. And I love that he brings the ball back and lays it down for you. Most dogs you have to pry it out of their mouth. Then I took him for a walk around the block (wanted to show him off to the neighbors, okay so I am a little conceited...). He did his jobs EXACTLY like you said. And he got on the scent of a R-A-B-B-I-T. I have lots of them around my house. Since my back yard isn't fenced in I will have to leash him when we go outside. ..After our parade around the neighborhood we came home and, you guessed it, played ball. I think I have him w-i-p-e-d out. He's laying on the floor out like a light, with a ball right next to him, of course. "I have to share something with you that made my night, and sealed my decision about adopting Rusty. We hit some heavy rain when we got on the expressway. It was really dark and ominous. Once we got on 422 around Oaks it stopped raining and the sky was bright and the sun was shining. All of a sudden I saw the most gorgeous rainbow I think I have ever seen. And, I saw this rainbow all the way to around the Pottstown area, about fifteen-twenty minutes. I've never seen a rainbow last that long. I have no doubts God provided that rainbow just for me as a sign that adopting Rusty was the right thing to do. It gave me such a deep peace that I can't explain or put into words. "Well, Rusty and I will continue to keep in touch and keep you updated on how the transition is progressing. Thank you so much for all you have done to help me learn about Rusty and how to care for him. I know we both have his best interest at heart. And, most of all, thank you for all the time, love, and care you and John have poured into this little guy!!! Rusty was very fortunate to have the wonderful foster family you guys provided for him. As a result, I think I am getting the best of Rusty, and for that I owe you a debt I could never repay."
Boy, do I miss him! It's awfully quiet around here without his scnhuffling sniffer! Even Saphira seems to sense the change in atmosphere.
That's right-- Saphira! Even though she was as social as you can get the ENTIRE adoption day, there were no takers! She greeted every person, young and old... and every dog, too! I am truly surprised that she is back with us. On the bright side, though, the resident girl-dogs are adjusting to her exuberance! Marz and Saphira will actually play dog games... and now Saphira can play ball without Rusty feeling threatened! Isn't this a great picture of Saphira "killing" the ugly bug??
| Well, no one was interested in Rusty at our last adoption day. He was absolutely wonderful in the car... we rode down with Nancy, another BREW foster person. Once we got to the pet store, he was a saintly creature, enduring toddler jabs, and too much noise, and other annoyances. About 2 hours into the event, Rusty curled into a tight ball on the floor and fell asleep. Poor guy!
While we were there, I met Saphira, a 10-mo-old puppy that was being housed in the kennels. Since no one adopted her or offered to foster her, she was going to be sent back to the kennels. What a waste! No one to write a paragraph for the website, no one to help with housetraining and home manners... and she's so young!
One week later, Saphira came to live with us. She's been with us about 2-1/2 weeks now and what a spitfire. She'll even give Marzipan what-for! I think she's awfully fun! And she's practically house-trained and doing better everyday with her other manners.
Here's what I added to the BREW site for Rusty:
"Hi everyone! It’s me again! Wow, things have really been busy for me!
"First, I got to go on a sleepover with a different family. They had a beagle girl and a beagle boy and a real live boy, too! My favorite was the real boy, of course. He would play ball with me and even let me sleep in his bed one night. I really liked sunning in the bay window and snoozing on the ottoman in the living room. The lady let me have the run of the house while she went to work, and even though I managed to close myself into the bathroom, I wasn’t a problem at all. I just took a nap and waited for the people to come home. I didn’t play with the other beagles too much, but I was a well-behaved boy.
"I also went to an adoption day. Did I see you there? I thought it was exhausting! We rode down with another BREW volunteer and I was very good in the car the whole way there and back. There surely were a lot of other beagles at that pet store. I was a pleasant boy, greeting everyone in my low-key, laid-back way. I was also agreeable around the other beagles. And when it got to be a bit much, I curled into a ball on the floor and took a nap. Even when people pet me or tried to wake me while I was sleeping, I didn’t grumble about it.
"I will be at the next adoption day, too. If you haven’t met me yet, please come! Until next time…"
And this is the new write-up for Saphira:
"Saphira is the very definition of what makes beagles so lovable! She is a social little girl, with energy to spare.
"Saphira initiates lots of playtime with our canine crew, but when they don’t reciprocate, she is happy to entertain herself with a soft squeaky toy or a chew. She is definitely an enthusiastic chow hound! It is so funny to see her jumping and wiggling her rear end with joy at the same time when the bowls appear!! But she is good natured about it all, too, with no sign of food aggression.
"Although Saphira is a busy little pup, she is also a sweet cuddler. She loves to snuggle up to us on the sofa for some quality time. Rub her belly and she’ll give you little kisses of appreciation.
"She is learning her manners, too. She is almost housetrained, and responds very well to being on a schedule. She is crate-trained, and settles quickly once in her crate. Saphira is learning sit, down, and off. She has given us a couple neighborhood adventures when she bolted out the door, so we’re going to work on some door manners, too.
"Sweet, funny, intelligent, curious, busy Saphira. She is an absolute delight to have in our home."
We have an adoption day scheduled for this weekend... I am so hopeful that Saphira will find her forever family. And Rusty? He'll be there, too. We'll just keep trying....

| HOO-BOY! We welcomed new BREW puppy, Saphira, to our home today! Settling in always has its hazards, but so far things are going fairly well. She is high energy, but seems to have some clue about the whole housetraining thing. She loves rawhide chews; and balls; and fuzzy, squeaky things. And cute? She is a real charmer!!!! | | |
